Lake Sammamish State Park, King, Washington, US
Jan 26, 2016 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Protocol: Traveling
2.5 mile(s)
Comments: Sharon Aagaard and Stan Wood birded with 17 weather hearty and good-natured birders at Eastside Audubon's monthly bird walk at Lake Sammamish State Park on January 26, 2016, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. It was cloudy with 95% steady rain/drizzle, 42-54F, 1-3 mph. The walk was soggy wet, the birds were quiet, we saw fewer mixed flocks than we're accustomed to, and the ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD that's 'always here on top of one of the small bushes' and the RED-TAILED HAWK that's 'always here in this field' weren't...... HIGHLIGHTS: we enjoyed a brief sighting of a perched COOPER'S HAWK who flew when we started fiddling with our scopes, a MERLIN perched in a distant conifer who also flew, but not because of our scopes, and a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER flew up from the ground, perched and stayed on a Big-leaf Maple tree branch, and 'mewed' for us. Smiles all around, making it worth having wet shoulders and drippy hats. Other worthy mentions: 1 distant RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, several close up male and female COMMON MERGANSERS, 1 WESTERN GULL hanging with the gull flock at Sunset Beach, a few BROWN CREEPERS delighting us with their upward, jerky foraging style and bright, white breast and throat. 42 species for the day, 64 for the year. Critters: Eastern Gray Squirrels. The next bird walk is FEBRUARY 29, 2016. No pre-registration, just show up depending on your mood or the weather. Since this is a state park, a Discover Pass is necessary to park ($10 daily, $30 annual). Just inside the main park entrance (NOT the boat launch entrance off of Eastlake Sammamish Parkway), we meet in the large parking lot to the left, and park in the middle of the first and second rows. <br />Submitted from eBird Android 1.0.1
44 species (+1 other taxa)
