Yesterday 40+ of us enjoyed a beautiful day at Nisqually. It was sunny and
warm with a light breeze. Unfortunately the birds did their best to stay
hidden in the thick foliage. We had a 0.9 low tide at 9:37 so there was no
water out on the restoration area. No one walked the estuary boardwalk.
First time that has happened.

Still, there were a few highlights. We had a pair of SANDHILL CRANES fly
over the refuge while we were in the orchard looking at a juvenile HAIRY
WOODPECKER. Other folks reported the CRANES out on the reclamation area,
but they were gone by the time we got there.

We also saw several BLUE-WINGED TEAL, including a pair at the visitor
center at the start of the walk. Not many other waterfowl were seen due to
extremely low water levels throughout the refuge.

CEDAR WAXWINGS, YELLOW WARBLERS and FLYCATCHERS were the most common birds
seen and they were numerous throughout the riparian areas, mostly heard but
a few seen.

For the day I had 39 species and now have 135 for the year. Mammals seen
were GRAY SQUIRREL, BLACK-TAILED DEER, and MUSKRAT.
