They used to be common in downtown Vancouver BC in the early 1970's.

Then they extended the South Delta Landfill and with the subsequent
expansion of the Glaucous-winged Gull population, the downtown gravel
rooftops in Vancouver where the nighthawks nested were appropriated by the
gulls and that was it for the downtown nighthawks.

They've been stupidly rare ever since here. Heard my first one in almost
ten years couple of nights ago in East Vancouver, Called twice, heading
northwest.
