I certainly will contact Fish & Wildlife--good idea to contact Cenex as well. And maybe the local (Admiralty) Audubon. Thanks for the suggestions, all!

So, birding community in the Chimacum area, perhaps it would be nice to let the store manager know you are going to pass this information around and discontinue patronizing a business which has not regard for life and is in fact breaking the law by destroying an active bird nest. Brenda, they are family operated but are a franchise of Cenex. Perhaps make complaint to them. Also try to contact the Dept of Fish and Wildlife as a witness to the destruction of the nest based upon the information Carol Riddell shared on her post.
At the very least, make them think twice about doing this again.

It was the CHS NW Chimacum Store--I think it's the only feed-and-gas place around there. I will certainly be boycotting, but as that was my first time in there, the impact will be limited...

What store was it? I think a boycott is in order and a public outcry.
What jerks!

The swallow parents were going nuts. I told the man at the cash register that what I was seeing was illegal and upsetting, and he shrugged and said that people "don't like them crapping on their cars." I then went out to talk the the guy doing the deed. He was unrepentant, saying "do you want it?" The nest had several young birds in it, feathered out but eyes closed still. He said it was a fire hazard having them in the light fixture, though I can't see how it was a fire hazard as long as the bulb was burned out but intact. He then set the nest on a nearby box, close to the ground and completely exposed to the weather/predators and said "There...safe and sound!"
