Sharon and Stan were joined by 11 others at Eastside Audubon's monthly bird walk at Lake Sammamish State Park. Mostly cloudy at the start changing to partly sunny, 45-54F, 2-5 mph. HIGHLIGHTS: 1 RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD--Sue had a brief sighting of a male at the end of the boardwalk; 1 HORNED GREBE; 3 RED-TAILED HAWKS in the sky at the same time, with two doing courtship maneuvers; 10 KILLDEER in one of the sports fields; 3 sightings of RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS, with two tending sap wells on a very close by Alder along the boardwalk out to Issaquah Point; at least 5 TREE/VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS--distant scope views, flying low over the lake; 8 PACIFIC WRENS--saw 2 well, close and in good light; 3 VARIED THRUSH-- singing, saw one female; 3 PURPLE FINCH--singing; 2 PINE SISKIN--saw both close up, feeding on Alder catkins; and 1 AMERICAN GOLDFINCH heard. 49 species for the day, 72 for the year. Critters: Eastern Gray Squirrels. The next bird walk is MARCH 23, 8 am to noon. (NOTE; BEGINNING APRIL 20, NEW HOURS ARE 6 am to 11 am, & APPLY TO MAY, JUNE, JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER.) No pre-registration, just show up rain or shine. Since this is a state park, a Discover Pass is necessary to park ($10 daily, $30 annual). Just inside the main park entrance (NOT the boat launch entrance off of Eastlake Sammamish Parkway), we meet in the large parking lot to the left, and park in the middle of the first and second rows.
