yesterday I did some birding around Vashon Island. I picked up a Black
Scoter in Quartermaster Harbor, but could not find any Rhinoceros Auklets
on my ferry rides north and south and with scope from shore. It looks like
Rhino's are being seen further north, but we usually spot them between
Tacoma and Vashon or off Browns Point, so I wonder why wintering Rhino's
are not being seen in the south sound this winter?

While at Tramp Harbor, a crow placed a small clam 2-3cm in diameter on the
road behind my car, then patiently waited for me to run over it and crack
it open. The clam was probably too small to bust open from an elevated
drop, so it was a perfect size for auto-road cracking!

I spent 2 hours Monday watching many cool gull species foraging and flying
around Tualco Road and Tualco Loop Road intersection while looking for the
Black-headed Gull. I finally noticed many of the gulls flying south east,
so I followed them. In a field north east of 192nd St SE, off Tualco Road,
between 192nd St SE and Riley Slough, I finally spotted the Black-headed
Gull with upwards of 200 other gulls. So it helps to cautiously drive
around the area to see where the gulls are roosting or foraging.
