Hi Tweets,
Yesterday I had a sapsucker spend about 10 minutes in my backyard in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle. It had a red crown and a black collar on it's chest, but no red nape and its chin was white (all the way to the black collar), not red. Nevermind that a red-naped sapsucker is already unusual in western Washington, is it possible that this was a very lost yellow-bellied sapsucker? I can't find any descriptions of a red-naped that does not include a red chin, although several sources suggest that the nape itself is sometimes white. The back was more dappled than boldly black and white, and the front had a buffy tinge. Sadly the bird did not stick around, but while it was here I got very good looks at it. Any ID help?
Thanks!Katie Messick
