Also see Larry Spear?s article in the June 1988 issue of Natural History Magazine, entitled The Halloween Mask Episode. Larry, who had the job of rebanding adults Western Gulls who were losing their bands, showed that gulls at the Farallon Islands recognize individual humans by their faces back in the 1980s. They even specifically remembered Larry the following year when he returned to the gull colony for the next nesting season.
