Hi Tweets,

Yesterday Barbara and I joined Steve Dang to bird Whidbey Island. We had
overcast weather most of the day with a few patches of sun. Temps were in
the upper 50s and low 60s with just enough breeze to make us keep our
windbreakers on all day.

Birding was steady as we started at Clinton Beach County Park, birded
across the island and then gradually worked our way north as far as Bos
Lake. The passerines were especially good at an abandoned lane off Bob
Galbreath Rd, and the west levee of Deer Lagoon. We found a few lingering
shorebirds: a WHIMBREL and 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS at the Lincoln St access, a
SPOTTED SANDPIPER at the west end of Deer Lagoon, and a BLACK TURNSTONE on
a gravelly bar north of Hastie Lake Landing. At Deer Lagoon we found a few
first of the year birds: a male YELLOW WARBLER, a pair of CEDAR WAXWINGS,
and a BLUE-WINGED TEAL. We found CALIFORNIA QUAIL and HOUSE WREN at Fort
Casey State Park, and then located the same two species at the Jacob Ebey
Prairie Park behind the cemetery near Coupeville. An active OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER at Fort Casey called repeatedly the entire time we were in the
park. All told, we managed 91 species for the day.
