Hi Tweets - In case any of you, like me, were wishing to see Three-toed Woodpeckers this fall, I seem to have stumbled into a bunch of them. While hiking the Maple Pass Loop off of Rainy Pass on Tuesday, we paused to admire the view of Lake Ann (from the ridge between that and Rainy Lake) and were gratified to have our FOY Three-toed fly right into a tree next to us and start pecking away! He stayed around for at least 10 minutes allowing great looks and photos. Nice fly-by by a Prairie Falcon also near the top of this ridge. Then, the next day, after completing a scenic bit of the PCT south from Hart's Pass, we stopped to look at some bird activity in the big burn area between the Pass and Meadow Campground (now toasted). The initial birds in view were several Townsend's Solitaires and Mountain Bluebirds. Hearing some drumming, we looked a little deeper among the dead tree stems and found another Three-toed! Teasing him just a bit with a Sibley drumming, two others showed up - perhaps a family unit. In addition to all this, the larches are at their yellow and gold peak, with a brilliant red and maroon huckleberry ground cover.
