I will echo what others have said. I took a day trip with Hawaii Forest &
Trail to Hakalau and it was superb! Except that it rained off and on the
whole day! We went to the preserve that is closed to the public and saw
most of the most spectacular and most endangered birds. Our guide was
excellent and worked hard to find birds for us. We even saw the Hawaiian
owl sitting on a post along the road, and stopped for a while to photograph
it. Good small group in a van, good lunch provided. I never could have
found these birds on my own! I want to go back and take their other trips.
