Following up on Matthew Dufort's posting re: pelagic birds in Puget Sound,
I saw a South Polar Skua while riding the ferry between Port Townsend and
Coupeville at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, September 12. The bird was briefly
chased by a Glaucous-winged Gull as it flew alongside the ferry, giving a
good indication of the Skua's size (smaller than the gull). The ID
clincher, beyond the bird's bulky shape and uniform rather dull brownish
color, were the white patches at the base of the primaries, which were
visible on both the upper and lower wing surfaces.
