The forecast was that this would be the last nice summer/fall day for a while, with rains and cooler temps predicted soon. Combined with an open fishing season, there were more boats on the water than there were waterbirds. And more dog walkers than I have seen in years, most of the dogs off leash. Sigh. But the birds seemed to know that a change was underfoot. Although the variety was decent it seemed a little quiet. Still, a few fall arrivals made it interesting.

Wood Duck - a pair continues, Promontory Pond
Common Merganser - a few, including juveniles, on the swim beach
Horned Grebe - a couple, first of fall
Virginia Rail - calling from Promontory Ponds
Eurasian Collared-Dove - 1 flew over the Entrance Pond; first of fall
Barn Owl - a couple of adult birds were hunting the Central Meadow
Pacific-slope Flycatcher - quietly foraging in a large willow, north end
Warbling Vireo - a couple on Promontory Point
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - first of fall
Swainson?s and Hermit Thrush - one of each
European Starling - many; one was alternating between imitations of a Bald Eagle and a car alarm!
Black-throated Gray Warbler - 3 on Promontory Point
Fox Sparrow - at least a dozen, first of fall, many singing ? must be the autumnal recrudescence ?.

Golden-crowned Sparrow - after a fleeting glimpse last week, they are definitely back
