Hi Tweeters & Inland-NW-Birders -

An updated version of the 2016 county year list project is up at Washington Birder. We've received updates from all the counties with details through the end of August. County compilers, especially for the under-birded counties, would appreciate receiving reports of any birds seen in their counties.

This year with 2/3 of the year done, we've tallied 380 species statewide. That's three more than last year at this point, seven better than 2014?s 373 and two below 2013?s total of 382.

Eastern WA has tallied 313 species, five higher than last year [308], six more than 2014 [307] and three down from 2013 [316].

Western WA, at 345 species, is identical to the total from last year, above the 2014 and 2015 totals [337 and 343 respectively]

26 counties are over 200 for the year, and 23 are doing better than last year at this point. That said, 30 counties are within 10 species of last year's total at this point - a sign of continued consistency despite he differences that we focus on every year. The biggest deviations from last year? Lewis County is up 21 species over last year, Columbia is up 17, and Asotin county is down 32.

Looking at species differences at this point in the lists this year and last - it really is almost all rare birds - Of the 14 species seen last year by this point but not this year, the only non-review species missed so far are Horned Puffin and Boreal Owl. Conversely, of the 17 species seen this year but not last year by this point - all are review species except White-winged Crossbill and Northern Hawk-Owl.

If you'd like to take a look at where things stand, the list and many other interesting files are at the Washington Birder website:

Thanks to all the compilers and all those pitching in to sketch a picture of another year's birds in WA.
