Steve Pink, Frank Caruso and I visited the Sunrise area at Mount Rainier yesterday afternoon/evening hoping to find Boreal Owls. ?We encountered some rain, hail, clouds and then beautiful clear night skies.
Extremely peaceful and quiet. ?Not a hoot or skiew call was heard. ?We had Gray Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers, Golden Crowned Sparrows, Mountain Chickadees, Yellow Rumped Warblers, Red Tailed Hawks, Brewer's Blackbirds, Cassin's Finches, Dark Eyed Juncoes, Golden Crowned Kinglets, a Raven, a Merlin and a Prairie Falcon. ?We also had a quick look at a raptor that we initially thought was a Northern Goshawk but are now thinking was an oddly plumaged juvenile Red Tail.
It was not completely quiet as the beautiful bugling of Elk was heard well into dark. ?We also saw at least 11 Mountain Goats.
Disappointing to not find owls but still a wonderful visit.
