Just before 1 pm yesterday I viewed 2 Common Terns, probably from the Broughton Beach group, foraging on the Washington side of the river along the industrial area between Marine Park and Beaches/McMenamins. I was watching from McCuddy?s (west of Broughton Beach) and tried to relocate them from waterfront areas along the WA side without success. The industrial area has very limited access, and the viewing tower at Marine Park was closed off for construction/repairs.

? Broughton Beach Gulls and Terns - 2 Updates

<http://groups.google.com/group/portland-area-birds/t/884b89e58b3fbbdb?utm_source=digest&utm_medium=email> Broughton Beach Gulls and Terns

Philip Kline <pgeorgekline at gmail.com>: Sep 24 01:49PM -0700

A few Western Gulls have been reported from Broughton Beach over the last
few days. Pure Western Gulls are uncommon in the Portland area, so I
headed down there to check them out. I didn't find one, but there were a
few hybrids to sort through. One was pretty close, but no cigar, and I'm
puzzled over a possible adult Herring Gull that I think is perhaps more
likely a hybrid Western x Glaucous-winged or perhaps even a Herring x
Glaucous-winged Gull instead.

Also saw and photographed two of the recently-reported Common Terns and had
a flyby Pectoral Sandpiper. Ebird checklist with photos embedded below.

If anyone has an opinion on the Gull photographs, I would love to hear it.

Good birding,

Philip, I also went to Broughton Beach this morning and wasn't able to find
any gulls that I'd call Western. I think the gull you photographed is a
hybrid in part because the mantle seems dark for a Herring (though shade of
darkness of the mantle can vary significantly at times with changes in
lighting).

There were 5 Common Terns resting on the beach when I was there. A real
treat to see so many.
