A rainy and blustery day can often depress the quality of the birding, but today did not seem to be the case. Rain varied from an off and on mizzle to the occasional downpour, and the winds increased dramatically throughout the morning, bringing out the sailboarders. Plenty of breeding intent and success and several notable appearances.

Canada Goose - a few with one pair continuing to nest in a cement culvert at Entrance Pond as they do every year
Eurasian Wigeon - male, also at Entrance Pond
Scaup - just a few stragglers remain
Hooded Merganser - 4 females, including one still entangled in green netting
RED-THROATED LOON - a first for me at the park; well out in the lake about the latitude of the boat launch; distant photo in checklist
Eared Grebe - transitioning to breeding plumage; it was not far out in the lake with a Horned Grebe also transitioning; having them side by side was a nice comparison
Osprey - flew in to perch on a snag in the Shore Lagoon where I was standing, to the concern of the RNDU; it remained for many minutes peering down at the water
Cooper?s Hawk - adult male bringing sticks to the incipient nest on Promontory Point
Virginia Rail - calling from a wet area between the northeast end of the sports field and the dog run
Wilson?s Snipe - several calling, early, from West Meadow
Eurasian Collared-Dove - as I was meeting Jan in the Children?s Hospital parking lot, the dove flushed from near the bark piles, first of year
Barn Owl - a couple of young-uns hissing in the Community Center box; when I returned about 6:30 an adult was peeking its head out the hole
Anna?s Hummingbird - many; the pair of chicks from one nest have now fledged
Northern Rough-winged Swallow - a few, first of year
Bushtit - a couple of nests in process
Red-breasted Nuthatch - a pair continuing to excavate a hole in a snag on Promontory Point
Hermit Thrush - one still here
Yellow-rumped Warbler - lots! more Myrtle than Audubon?s

For the day, 63 species.
