The last stragglers of the wintering ducks are still here which, with several new arrivals, allowed a plentiful checklist today. Despite the mild weather, there were fewer walkers, dogs or otherwise, this morning, though it seemed the number of float planes was higher than normal. It kept threatening to rain, but the wet was mostly from dripping off the trees.

Hooded Merganser - the female entangled in the green netting is still hanging around
California Quail - at least a couple; calling
Ring-necked Pheasant - still around, calling from the north end
Common Loon - one a ways out on the lake
Pied-billed Grebe - the parks crew put in new beaver cheaters, lowering the level of Promontory Pond by at least a couple of feet. With the exposed shore and vegetation, there is plenty of material for the grebes to used for nesting and at least two pair have already taken advantage
Mourning Dove - calling from the sycamore at the swim beach; FOY
Barn Owl - two young hissing from box at community center
Vaux?s Swift - a couple; FOY
Anna?s Hummingbird - another female on a new nest
Pileated Woodpecker - a male was bopping all around the east side of Promontory Point; FOY
Warbling Vireo - at least half a dozen, very vocal; FOY
Hermit Thrush - a few were calling early, giving the waay call, and one was singing its full song
Orange-crowned Warbler - about 20
Yellow-rumped Warbler - over 70! most were Audubon?s, a few Myrtle, at least one intergrade
Wilson?s Warbler - a few, very vocal; FOY

For the day, 69 species; with 5 FOY species, the year count is now 102.
