Subject: [Tweeters] SAS Owling Field Trip

This morning I met 7 owlers from the 0210 ferry from Seattle and toured them
through Bainbridge Owl country. The weather was about as perfect as it gets
for owling, - calm winds, cold, with temperatures from 33-36 degrees, high
barometer, and a full moon hidden behind clouds most of the morning. The
group enjoyed vocalizations from all four species of owls detected - a
screaming barn owl, several pairs of caterwauling barred owls, many
different vocalizations from northern saw-whet owls, including three males
that called for lengthy periods of time but refused to give other than
glimpses for looks, and a northern pygmy owl at dawn. Three of the barred
owls allowed viewing of bands that revealed that they were 10,6, and 11
years old. In all, the group totaled 7 barred owls, 5 northern saw-whet
owls, 1 barn owl, and 1 northern pygmy owl.
