Morning, Tweeters,

I awoke about 3am to the sound of a torrential downpour. Husband still not home from work and a tiny little hummingbird (not sure it was in that order ;-)) 30' up; I envisioned them both baling water with a bucket or a pair of wings.

At dawn, I was pleased to find them both home and dry - well at least one of them. But looking through the scope, I can still see droplets of water on the hummer's bill. I try to envision how she survives such a powerful rain. Such a tiny thimble of a nest seems impossible not to overflow with water every minute, but there she is, holding down her tiny fort. I only wish it had a roof!!!

A day of reprieve! I've been through this a few times now - and I know worse things can happen. It's always just a roller coaster! I wish I could put a little baffle over her. After putting the suet cage around the bushtit nest, I keep thinking I can save them all - at least make them more comfortable. I know - it would be making me more comfortable. I realize there are a lot of other nests out there, too. I hope they too fared well last night.

I need a nap!
