This morning just at sunrise there was a barred owl at Robin Hill County Park. A Cooper's Hawk was diving at it and chased it through the woods. This went on for 12 minutes. About one third of the time the owl chased the Cooper's Hawk. It seems to me this was a rather dangerous game for the Coopers Hawk to be playing. Eventually they ended the game with both birds flying away safely.

I was parked at Helen's pond today and observed a gull grab A female Bufflehead and fly with it to the road side. The gull had the bird by the neck and upon reaching the road let go of its prey and started beating on it with its beak. The duck got away and the gull caught it. This happened at least three times. The birds were in the middle of the road when a truck came along. The driver saw what was happening and drove close blowing his horn. At this point the duck got away again and flew my direction. I got some pictures of this drama as it unfolded. The duck made it into some BlackBerry brambles along the side of the road. When the gull left I went to find the bird in order to take it to rehab. Unfortunately it flew off. I will post pictures of this event on my eBird checklist tonight.

I had a good day of birding with 78 species in Clallam County.
