hello elizabeth, philip, and everyone,

as in most years since i've relocated to germany, my first bird of the year
was a giant flock of carrion crows, Corvus corone, as they flew over the
roof of my 13th-floor flat on their way from their night roost to where
ever they go to forage during the day.

next year, i am hoping to see bohemian waxwings, Bombycilla garrulus, as my
first bird of the year. they apparently love the large silver birch tree,
Betula pendula, that stands in the yard of the house that my spouse & i
just bought in Norway, where we are relocating. (the former owner of our
house showed us some photos of waxwings crammed into that tree & asked us
to not chop it down. like, NEVER!!)

may you all have a birdy new year!
