I spent most of the day birding Lewis County. All shallow ponds were frozen, some roads were still icy, and the sun shined bright. I started at Alexander Park, but the diversity was down, most likely due to the cold temps. Next was Stan Hedwall Park. Lots of SONG SPARROWS and a single RING-BILLED GULL. But across the road in the farm fields, there was 1 SNOW GOOSE and 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE in the mix with lots of CANADA GEESE and CACKLER GEESE. Next on the list was the Dairy Farm on Jorgensen Rd. Huge flocks of STARLINGS and BREWERS BLACKBIRDS in the fields and on the power lines, but could not find any thing unusual. I did have a NORTHERN HARRIER fly over. Then on to Mayfield Lake County Park. A staggering 40 CANVASBACKS, most I?ve seen at one place in this county. Also present were, WESTERN GREBE, LESSER SCAUPS, and other waterfowl. Next was the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery. There were BARROW?S GOLDENEYE, COMMON GOLDENEYE, a PEREGRINE FALCON, 1 SNOW GOOSE, and the other usual suspects. Last was the Cowlitz Trout Hatchery. There were good numbers of waterfowl, a SPOTTED SANDPIPER, an overwintering OSPREY (third consecutive year now), and a BLACK PHOEBE. I managed some photos of the Osprey and Phoebe.
