I'm thinking also that it could be juncos - I hear that everyday in my yard that has lots of tall conifers. But I mainly hear the sounds from a single junco that is calling out for seemingly hours, from one of the bushes (8-10 ft. high). I still have a few pair of juncos that nest in the yard and don't migrate.
But then the calls of towhees can be very similar to juncos, just louder. One summer while hearing and seeing a junco calling in the early a.m through noon, I then followed some louder calls later in the day and saw that they were coming from a towhee.
Maybe you have competing junco males ?
