Yeah ? not just laptop bans, but anything with a battery ? including cameras. This is going to get interesting. I am trusting in the flying business-people of the world to tell TSA just where they can put their laptop ban. Not to mention parents with kids and people with cameras. You are not lately allowed to put batteries in your luggage, so it is not clear exactly where they think they?re going to go if there?s also an on-board ban.

i would never EVER put anything more valuable than a week's supply of used underpants into checked luggage. reading news stories about the *increase* in theft of electronics, jewellery and other valuables from checked bags by TSA is not for the faint of heart:

i am also in an electronic conversation right now with a professional photographer who told me his laptop was stolen from his checked bag and he had to buy a new laptop to replace it whilst on a layover in iceland. when i asked him what the airlines did about this, he said they did nothing. NOTHING. i hugged my precious laptop close and allowed myself to be tormented by a couple seconds of pure terror before i started googling the latest regulations for flying in to london, since i am flying there today. (i am hearing rumours -- only rumours -- that the UK "laptop ban" will soon be expanded to include europe.)

I would never put my scope (or bins or camera) in checked luggage, with or without a TSA lock. If I take a scope, I put it in my carry-on hard case with my camera and bins, and put the tripod in my luggage. That being said, I wouldn?t bother taking a scope to Kaua?i. Times when you can use it will be minimal.

Must see places to visit are Kilauea Point and Hannalei NWRs on the north coast. The only place to see endemics are Kokee State Park and Alakai Swamp (next to each other). Personally, I wouldn?t go into the swamp without a guide, especially the first time. The hiking isn?t bad, just not a lot of signage. I recommend David Kuhn. He has more info and a really nice CD for sale at his website www.soundshawaiian.com <http://www.soundshawaiian.com> . The only bird book you need is Hawaii?s Birds by the Hawaii Audubon Society. It is available from HAS, some local spots, and probably Amazon.
