I was at the M Street marsh in Auburn on Saturday morning, looking at ducks
and shorebirds in a light rain, when a squall blew through with high(er)
winds and madly dumping rain . After 10 minutes or so of heavy rain, the
swallows started landing on a wire fence right in front of me. The cool
thing was that they landed in species order -- the violet-greens, trees,
barns and cliff swallows all bunched into stationary, easily-identifiable
groups. The lone(ly) northern rough-winged sparrow at the end of the wire
looked forlorn.

It was by far the best sparrow family photo I've seen, and it made the
differences between them all quite obvious. My sparrowing skills took a
jump Saturday.

Also saw three kinds of teals, some dowitchers and a spotted sandpiper. It
was a good, albeit soggy, morning.
