Tweeters,
Although it was cool to begin with (44degF), we had no wind and mostly sunny skies as the day warmed up (66degF at the end). The 21 of us enjoyed the stroll around the golf course and had several highlights: EIGHT warbler species, the first of which we identified was a HERMIT WARBLER (two in the same area as last year); many of us saw a Townsend's/Hermit hybrid, which tended more toward the Hermit side of the species equation; EIGHT Bald Eagles, seven of which were in what appeared to be a "kettle" over the 13th hole; a HOUSE WREN nesting inside a street-light fixture near the maintenance shops (seen first last month); excellent views of many BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS; and flyovers of RED CROSSBILLS and of EVENING GROSBEAKS. Missing were adults or young at the Red-tailed Hawk nest at Hodge Lake. We expected to see more swallows at Hodge Lake, but the "housing development" there was getting some structural renovations (stabilizing the poles holding the various nest boxes). Several Violet-green and Tree Swallows were circling the area.
The JBLM Eagles Pride GC birders meet the third Thursday of each month at 8:00AM. Starting point is Bldg # 1514, Driving Range Tee, Eagles Pride Golf Course, I-5 Exit 116, Mounts Road Exit. Upcoming walks include the following:
? June 15
? July 20
? August 17
Anyone is welcome to join us!
