Brief names (acronyms) are OK when the audience knows the birds.

In general they are difficult; and discourage new birders.

We want to encourage new birders; so, I say restrain.

We are not an exclusive fraternity.

A Roughie is actually a fish.

A Rough-legged Hawk is a raptor.

Please help save us from other such "cute" atrocities like "Kessy", "P-bird", and, of course, "Baldy".

And, no, I don't know why "Sharpie" is OK. It just is.

And "Coopie" and "Gossy" just aren't.

OK, I feel better now.
