For people who enjoy referring to birds by names they enjoy calling them
by, other than the names the rest of us might have learned in the bird
books, I have no trouble with people introducing the bird by the widely
known name first, then follow it up with your favorite nickname, when there
is no chance of confusing it with another species you would be talking
about. I might enjoy saying that "I saw that Bald Eagle grab that
coot, then enjoyed watching Baldy eat his booty of a cooty!" No one is
likely to be struggling to figure out which bird species you are talking
about.
