Last year I was fortunate to have a Coopers hawk nest in the neighborhood. She fledged two young (but not before giving me a serious warning when I spent too long looking directly at the nest with my binoculars a couple days before they fledged). She hung around this winter often perching in the same tree she used for sentry duty while the young were developing. Today I heard loud vocalization, looked up to see her and a slightly smaller adult, which I presume is her potential mate for the season, sitting side by side in the tree. I was privileged to hear them vocalizing more softly in tones that reminded me of a nuthatch. I'm hoping for another nesting this year.
