Dear Tweeters,
Today, 5th April 2018, I spotted a white thing at the Fir Island Game Range, AKA Wylie Slough. It was very, very distant, and rain was pouring down in buckets. I spent an hour waiting for it to move, peering through the scope. I thought I saw it flinch a time or two, but conditions were suboptimal to say the least.
My viewing spot on the River's End Trail. Through the vegetation, I could look in the direction of Hayton Reserve. I carved an X on a tree along the trail, so that next time, I can look out there and see if there is still an owl-shaped white thing out on a piece of driftwood. If there is not, I shall be sorely tempted to call today's sighting a Snowy Owl, retroactively. Unless some prankster thought it prudent to clamber out across the mud and place a fake owl on a log!
Oh, well, Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Great Grey Owl still make for a pretty good 3-species day of diurnal owling.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
