Some notes to remember in Big Island birding.


Access to the Palila requires 4WD. We went up there once in 2WD, before the requirement was in place, and the road isn't bad but 2WD chews the road (dirt) too much. Hakalau NWR requires a permit for access and these are distributed to guides by the Refuge. The number of permits is limited. There are a couple species best (just about only) seen there.
