Fortunately for birders, the wind didn't pick up until late morning. It was actually pretty nice early, even with periods of light rain, but when the wind did come-;20+ mph-;could not hear anything but the gulls and geese. Then, the rain started in earnest. But, even with the drama, there were birds, including several new for the year.

Greater White-fronted Goose - first of year; hanging out with a group of Canadas, Am Wigeons and Gadwalls
Cackling Goose - pretty funny to see this tiny goose in a flock of Canadas
Waterfowl - still have Wigeons and Bufflehead but the Scaup and Goldeneyes appear to have gone north
Common Loon - one out in the lake off the swim beach
Great Blue Heron - since we don't get many, it was interesting to watch these two interacting while flying near the ground
Osprey - one is back; on the nest platform at NOAA
Cooper's Hawk - one calling on Promontory Point but no action at the nest
Virginia Rail - one making the k-k-k-keer call from the Marsh Ponds; female?
Anna's Hummingbird - breeding continues: one feeding two very large young, two sitting on nests, another making last adjustments to a new nest; other nests abandoned or were successful
Pileated Woodpecker - uplands; first of year
Barn Swallow - many over the water; first of year
Violet-green Swallow - may have been 200 or more
Black-capped Chickadee - lots; one chiseling out a hole in a snag on Promontory Point
Common Yellowthroat - wetlands; first of year
Yellow-rumped Warbler - half a dozen Myrtle, 24 Audubon's counted; many more for sure; almost all were males
Brown-headed Cowbird - a couple; first of year

For the day, 57 species; with GWFG, OSPR, PIWO, BARS, COYE and BHCO new, up to 87 for the year.
