Dear Tweeters,
Today, the ninth of June, a singing Grey Catbird greeted me at Barnaby Slough, near Rockport, Skagit County. To try for this bird, park the car, walk in between the boulders, and take a left when you come to the site of the former caretaker's house, which is now a gravelly clearing. A few hundred meters up the old access road (now getting narrower and narrower with weeds), there is an end to the long, narrow pond on the right, with a narrow bit of soggy ground separating that pond from the next pond, which is smaller and more rectangular.
This smaller pond has some outbuildings and concrete structures at its far end; the catbird was singing all along the stretch that leads to the outbuildings. I put a bit of pink tape with the letters "grca" on the left side of the path, right where I first heard the bird singing. One can also see a big piece of light-colored pipe under the water of the rectangular pond, near where the bird was singing. The bird moved all along here, seeming to follow me as it sang, while I walked farther down the path.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
