Hi Tweeters & Inland-NW-Birders -

An the 2018 county year list project, updated through the end of February, is up at Washington Birder. Better late than never! We've received updates from most [but not all] counties with details through the end of February. County compilers, especially for the underbirded counties, would appreciate receiving reports of any birds seen in their counties.

As of the end of February 243 species had been reported across the state, 212 species in western WA and 196 in eastern WA.
The state total [243] is 1 higher than the end-feb totals in 2017 and is the 2nd year well below the previous end-Feb highs.
The Western WA total [212] was seven lower than last year, and 18 lower than two years ago.
The Eastern WA total [196] this year was five higher than last year and a bit above the norm for eastern WA at this point.

Overall, it looks like it was a slow start to the year -; that said, a big difference might be something as simple as the lack of reports from powerhouse Grays Harbor [and the pelagic goodness it will add to the list] -; add in another dozen birds from Grays Harbor, and we are probably looking at a pretty typical start to the year.

Common Redpolls continued to make their impressive showing across the state, with 29 counties reporting them so far this year -; that is one more county than reported them in 2017.

I'm looking forward to seeing how things shape up as our spring migrants come back/through.

If you'd like to take a look at where things stand, the list and many other interesting files are at the Washington Birder website:

Thanks to all the compilers and all those pitching in to begin to sketch a picture of another year's birds in WA.
