Yesterday, Eastside Audubon took a trip to Kittitas County. We started
early, still mostly dark and temperature about 37. As we progressed east on
I-90 we did see a COMMON RAVEN. A quick stop at Traveler's Rest at
Snoqualmie Pass resulted in one EUROPEAN STARLING - lots of snow still piled
up and temperature now 28F.



At the pond just past Elk Heights we saw MALLARD and GADWALL. A bit later we
had EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE. By now daylight and clear. Further along I-90
we saw RED-TAILED HAWK, GREAT BLUE HERON. COMMON GOLDENEYE and AMERICAN
KESTREL.



When we turned off at the Kittitas exit and a quick rest stop at the gas
station we saw AMERICAN ROBIN, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE,
HOUSE SPARROW (lots in the hedge across the road) and three ROCK PIGEON
flying over. In Kittitas itself we saw MOURNING DOVE, EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE, and EUROPEAN STARLING.



Along Caribou Rd. we saw MOURNING DOVE, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, MALLARD and
heard CALIFORNIA QUAIL. As we drove along the Vantage Hwy we found AMERICAN
ROBIN, EUROPEAN STARLING, RED-TAILED HAWK, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD and a single
perched male CALIFORNIA QUAIL.



On Parke Creek Rd. there was a KILLDEER and at the pond we saw RED-WINGED
and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDs, COMMON RAVEN, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, MALLARD,
COMMON MERGANSER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, HOUSE SPARROW and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD.
It had warmed up to 37F



Back on Vantage Hwy we saw a SAY'S PHOEBE, and at the entrance to the Wild
Horse Wind Farm a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD and AMERICAN CROW. We moved down to the
Quilomene Wildlife Area and after some effort managed to pull out a
SAGEBRUSH SPARROW that everyone got good looks. Low winds, but at 37F it
felt colder.



Down Recreation Drive (Rocky Coulee Recreation Area) we saw GREATER SCAUP,
COMMON GOLDENEYE and HORNED GREBE on the Columbia River (Wanapum Reservoir).
And in the area COMMON RAVEN, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE (a
very special bird), HOUSE FINCH, NORTHERN FLICKER (heard), AMERICAN ROBIN,
and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. Up the hill to Gingko Petrified Forest State Park
Interpretive Center we picked up AMERICAN KESTREL, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD,
AMERICAN ROBIN, and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD.



As we made our way along Huntzinger Road we found GREATER SCAUP, COMMON
GOLDENEYE, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW (several flocks on the power lines),
AMERICAN KESTREL, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE and AMERICAN CROW.



At a lunch stop at the Cove area we found NORTHERN FLICKER, CANADA GOOSE,
GREATER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW, TREE SWALLOW, GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, SAYS' PHOEBE, WESTERN MEADOWLARK and heard CHUKAR calling.



At the Huntzinger Boat Launch (below the Wanapum Dam) we saw GREATER SCAUP,
AMERICAN CROW, a pair of COMMON GOLDENEYE and a pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE
alongside each other (wonderful comparison), BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE and TREE
SWALLOW.



In Wanapum State Park we saw AMERICAN ROBIN, DARK-EYED JUNCO, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, HOUSE FINCH, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE.



Cruising west on I-90 we passed a RED-TAILED HAWK on a nest, a BELTED
KINGFISHER, and on the large pond there were COMMON MERGANSER (about 65
plus, male and female), MALLARD, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, AMERICAN WIGEON,
RING-NECKED DUCK, CANADA GOOSE and GREAT BLUE HERON.



Along Umtamum Road there was BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, EUROPEAN STARLING,
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, COOPER'S HAWK, GREAT HORNED OWL on nest, AMERICAN ROBIN,
DARK-EYED JUNCO, HOUSE FINCH and EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE.



On Durr Road we saw COMMON RAVEN and a pair of MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDs.



On Hwy 97 we had RED-TAILED HAWK (including two on nests with one visited by
a second bird), EUROPEAN STARLING, GREAT HORNED OWL ( two on nests),
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE and COMMON RAVEN.



On Swauk Prairie Rd. there was a large flock of DARK-EYED JUNCOs. On Lay Rd.
there were CANADA GOOSE, AMERICAN ROBIN, BUFFLEHEAD, and AMERICAN COOT.
Along Red Bridge Rd. we saw EUROPEAN STARLING and RED-TAILED HAWK.



Finally going home along I-90 we saw a BALD EAGLE. We finished with an
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD at the P&R in Issaquah.



It was a good day with 52 species seen, lots of sun, little wind and a high
temperature of 62 and good friends.
