Hi Tweeters,

Really good birding in Kittitas County on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th. Places birded were Cle Elum (Miner's Trail and Railroad Ponds), Umptanum Road, including the hike to the falls, and Carlson Canyon in the Teanaway.

I think we saw the whole suite of Kittitas County birds one expects in late May. Highlights include:

Veery: at least one on the Miner's Trail, about a mile from the trailhead, and several near the entrance to the Fish Hatchery at the Railroad Poinds. Very vocal around dusk.

Yellow Warbler: seen and singing practically everywhere.

Mountain and Western Bluebirds: lots of activity at the nesting boxes along Umptanum Road; many birds actively feeding noisy nestlings.

Sage Thrasher: several seen along Umptanum Road along with lots of singing Brewer's Sparrows and a couple of Rock Wren.

Lazuli Bunting and Yellow-breated Chat: on the hike to Umptanum Falls. One Chat in the brush in the parking lot, another on the walk to the falls, both very vocal.

Western Tanager: easily heard and seen on Umptanum Road, and also on the Carlson Canyon hike.

White-breasted Nuthatch: a nesting pair on Umptanum Road.

Mammal sightings include both a Snowshoe Hare and a Badger, both on Umptanum Road. The Badger crossed the road in front of our car, the Hare was munching something on the side of the road.

All in all, a great weekend.
