Yesterday, Seattle Audubon took a trip to Whidbey Island. As expected the
day started out gray and overcast and a temperature of 51F, but with no
rain. In Mukilteo, while waiting for the ferry we saw GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL,
SURF SCOTER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and EUROPEAN STARLING.
On the ferry ride over we added a few more SURF SCOTER, a CALIFORNIA GULL,
and a BONAPARTE'S GULL. It was just light enough at Clinton Beach Park to
scan the area around the ferry terminal (still no rain) and we saw BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE, SURF SCOTER, BELTED KINGFISHER, ROCK PIGEON, EUROPEAN STARLING,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, RED-NECKED GREBE, SONG
SPARROW, SPOTTED TOWHEE, HOUSE SPARROW, RING-BILLED GULL, WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER, NORTHERN FLICKER and BUFFLEHEAD.



We drove up to Deer Lake and saw BUFFLEHEAD, AMERICAN ROBIN, SONG SPARROW,
AMERICAN CROW, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, EUROPEAN STARLING, BELTED KINGFISHER,
PACIFIC WREN, BEWICK'S WREN, and CEDAR WAXWING. Our next stop was at
Rollinghill Road where we had SONG SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET,
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE, AMERICAN CROW,
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, NORTHERN FLICKER and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. There was
a light breeze and it was starting to feel wetter.



At Maxwellton we stopped where we could scan the Bay (feeling more like
rain) and found CANADA GOOSE, AMERICAN WIGEON, MALLARD, RED-THROATED LOON
(1), HORNED GREBE, MEW GULL, RING-BILLED GULL, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL,
AMERICAN CROW, BUFFLEHEAD, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and two unusual AMERICAN
COOTS. Next over to Dave Mackie Park and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, MALLARD,
AMERICAN WIGEON, NORTHERN FLICKER, GREAT BLUE HERON, HORNED GREBE, COMMON
LOON, RED-NECKED GREBE, RING-BILLED GULL, KILLDEER, BALD EAGLE, BELTED
KINGFISHER, AMERICAN ROBIN, and ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD. As we arrived at the
park it started to rain and the breeze picked up.



The Ewing Road wetlands are now flooded, and as opposed to Wednedsay there
were few ducks - only MALLARDs (a bunch), and NORTHERN PINTAIL, and the rain
was acting like it was settling in. On to Sunlight Beach Rd. and Deer Lagoon
- rain, wind, 51F and chilly feeling. We saw BALD EAGLE, GREAT BLUE HERON,
MALLARD, AMERICAN WIGEON (good numbers), RING-BILLED GULLs, GLAUCOUS-WINGED
GULLs (and hybrids). Out the public access and at the edge of Useless Bay we
saw BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, DUNLIN, WESTERN SANDPIPER, and GLAUCOUS-WINGED
GULL.



Around to the main part of Deer Lagoon (with rain), but we saw AMERICAN
WIGEON (lots and lots), MALLARD, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREATER SCAUP, GADWALL,
SNOW GOOSE, HOODED MERGANSER, NORTHERN SHOVELER, BUFFLEHEAD, GREAT BLUE
HERON, PIED-BILLED GREBE, AMERICAN COOT, SPOTTED TOWHEE, VIRGINIA RAIL
(heard), BALD EAGLE, and COMMON RAVEN. With the now constant rain and steady
wind we decided to mostly bird from the car.



A quick stop at Freeland Park with BUFFLEHEAD, SURF SCOTER, COMMON LOON and
HORNED GREBE. At Bush Point we saw BUFFLEHEAD, PACIFIC LOON (several but
distant), RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, ROCK PIGEON, PIGEON GUILLEMOT, HEERMANN'S
GULL, COMMON LOON, DARK-EYED JUNCO, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and EUROPEAN
STARLING.



As we drove toward Crockett Lake the rain picked up, but there were good
number of birds on the lake including BUFFLEHEAD, HOODED MERGANSER, GREATER
SCAUP, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, DUNLIN , WESTERN SANDPIPER, GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, NORTHERN HARRIER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, GREAT BLUE HERON, dowitcher
species (light too bad and too distant to be more specific than that),
MALLARD, BALD EAGLE, GADWALL, and AMERICAN WIGEON (the total of wigeon at
the various locations was in the thousands). At the Keystone ferry terminal
we had all three cormorants DOUBLE-CRESTED, PELAGIC and BRANDT'S on the old
platform, RED-BREASTD MERGANSER, AMERICAN CROW, RED-NECKED GREBE,
RHINOCEROUS AUKLET, HARLEQUIN DUCK (beautiful males), CALIFORNIA GULL and
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL and the inevitable hybrids. As the weather was getting
worse we headed south and home.



On La Conner Rd. just south of SR20 we saw CANADA GOOSE, SNOW GOOSE, and
several GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. On Dodge Valley Rd. there were EUROPEAN
STARLING and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDs. Along Valentine Rd. was a COOPER'S HAWK,
DARK-EYED JUNCO and AMERICAN ROBIN. At the Hayton Preserve there were
several hundred (maybe as many as 1500) SNOW GEESE, DUNLIN, RED-TAILED HAWK,
COMMON RAVEN, BUFFLEHEAD, GREATER SCAUP, GREAT BLUE HERON SPOTTED TOWHEE and
a PEREGRINE FALCON.



In spite of the rain and wind it was a successful day and we finished with
76 species.
