Yesterday, WOS took a trip up to Whidbey Island. Our day started out a bit
chllier (48F) than the week before and overcast. The clouds began to break
up by Mukilteo and we had little wait time getting onto the ferry. From the
ferry we saw SURF SCOTER, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, AMERICAN CROW,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL and a nice flight of BONAPARTE'S GULLs (about 30). At
the Clinton ferry terminal and Clinton Beach Park we saw ROCK PIGEON, SURF
SCOTER, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, RED-NECKED GREBE, HORNED
GREBE, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, PELAGIC CORMORANT, and PIGEON GUILLEMOT.
The sea conditions were relatively flat and views were good for a ways out,
with no wind.



Our second stop was at Deer Lake, with a few birds on the lake including
COMMON MERGANSER and BUFFLEHEAD. In the trees and bushes around the area we
saw, or heard, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, EUROPEAN STARLING, BALD EAGLE, AMERICAN
ROBIN, PACIFIC WREN, SPOTTED TOWHEE and SONG SPARROW. When we first arrived
at Rollinghill Rd. it was pretty quiet, but we soon picked up NORTHERN
FLICKER, VARIED THRUSH, SPOTTED TOWHEE, SONG SPARROW, BEWICK'S WREN, ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD, HOUSE FINCH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (king of questioned that
when we first heard them, but then they flew off. A bit later one came back
and perched in sight). We also had RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, FOX SPARROW and
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE.



As we came into Maxwellton we could see CANADA GOOSE and a couple of GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. From a wide spot on Maxwellton Rd we saw AMERICAN
WIGEON, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, MEW GULL, CALIFORNIA GULL, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD,
EUROPEAN STARLING, a MOURNING DOVE, and EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE. At Dave
Mackie Park we scanned the south end of Useless Bay and saw AMERICAN WIGEON,
MALLARD, HORNED GREBE, COMMON LOON, RED-THROATED LOON, BUFFLEHEAD,
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, WESTERN GREBE, HARLEQUIN DUCK, PACIFIC LOON, RED-NECKED
GREBE, RHINOCEROUS AUKLET, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, NORTHERN FLICKER and
GREAT BLUE HERON. We had a few very brief sprinkles.



It was very quiet at the Outdoor Classroom, but we did hear PACIFIC WREN and
DOWNY WOODPECKER. Around at the Ewing Rd. wetlands the water is very high
and we missed the good numbers of ducks that were present a week ago. We did
see MALLARD, CANADA GOOSE, NORTHERN FLICKER, AMERICAN CROW, PEREGRINE
FALCON, AMERICAN ROBIN and GREAT BLUE HERON.



Up to Sunlight Beach Rd. and the eastern extension of Deer Lagoon. The tide
was way out and we found RING-BILLED GULL, GREAT BLUE HERON, AMERICAN WIGEON
(good numbers), GREEN-WINGED TEAL, HOODED MERGANSER, DUNLIN, RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD, NORTHERN FLICKER, HOUSE SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, HOUSE
FINCH, EUROPEAN STARLING, a distant perched COOPER'S HAWK, BALD EAGLE and
NORTHERN HARRIER. We walked out the access and added BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
DUNLIN, and WESTERN SANDPIPER.



A lunch stop at Freeland Park added AMERICAN CROW, MALLARD, MEW GULL, GREAT
BLUE HERON, COMMON LOON RED-NECKED GREBE, WESTERN GREBE, SURF SCOTER, HORNED
GREBE, BONAPARTE'S GULL, RHINOCEROUS AUKLET, BUFFLEHEAD, DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANT, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, PIED-BILLED GREBE and GLAUCOUS-WINGED
GULL. With some sun!



At Deer Lagoon we saw ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD, VARIED THRUSH, GADWALL, AMERICAN
WIGEON (huge numbers), NORTHER PINTAIL, PIED-BILLED GREBE, CHESTNUT-BACKED
CHICKADEE, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, SPOTTED TOWHEE, MALLARD, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, DARK-EYED JUNCO,
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, GREAT BLUE HERON,
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (close enough to i.d.), BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, DUNLIN
FOX SPARROW, a EURASIAN WIGEON (finally after looking at thousands of
American Wigeon on three trips), HOODED MERGANSER, GREATER SCAUP, LESSER
SCAUP and PURPLE FINCH. Along Doubled Bluff Rd. we saw EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE.



At Bush Point there were BONAPARTE'S GULLs, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT,
PACIFIC LOON, SURF SCOTER, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, PIGEON GUILLEMOT,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, GREAT BLUE HERON and HORNED GREBE. As we turned onto
SR525 in the Greenbank area there was a perched RED-TAILED HAWK. Up at
Crockett Lake we saw MALLARD, SNOW GOOSE, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, GREATER
SCAUP, PIED-BILLED GREBE, GREAT BLUE HERON. We had what we thought was a
very distant perched NORTHERN HARRIER. As we scanned it a PEREGRINE FALCON
zoomed by, the Harrier flushed and later took prey, a ROUGH-WINGED HAWK
hovered and soared, a COMMON RAVEN flew by, and a RED-TAILED HAWK was
perched on a phone pole. On the lake we saw GREATER YELLOWLEGS, DUNLIN and
GREEN-WINGED TEAL.



At Keystone, the platform had almost no cormorants, but we did see
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, AMERICAN CROW, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL (an apparently
pure one), BONAPARTE'S GULL, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, PIGEON GUILLEMOT,
COMMON LOON, RED-NECKED GREBE and BELTED KINGFISHER. On the way into
Coupeville, in a field, we saw AMERICAN KESTREL, SNOW GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL and CALIFORNIA GULL.



At the western end of Penn Cove there were BALD EAGLE, BUFFLEHEAD, MALLARD
HOUSE FINCH.



It was a good day with good folks, decent weather and we wound up with 81
species for the day. We finally ran into some rain back south by Everett.
