For anyone heading towards the central Washington coast, I just returned
from a good couple of days shorebirding in the Ocean Shores - Midway Beach
area. The parade of shorebirds started on Monday with two Red Knots on the
Ocean Shores beach and continued with three *Stilt Sandpipers* in the west
pond on the Oyhut shorebird flats. Later, a hike around the nearby Damon
Point produced one *American and six Pacific Golden-plovers* and a flock of
eleven *Baird's Sandpipers*. Based on some advice, I made a quick trip
back to the Hoquiam STP to find the juvenile *RUFF* feeding with two
Pectoral Sandpipers along the eastern shore of the west STP pond. The day
concluded with a *Buff-breasted Sandpiper* and several Pectorals back at
the Oyhut ponds. My second day (yesterday) started out a bit slow (other
than the three *Stilt Sandpipers* still at Oyhut) but picked up down at the
Midway Beach ponds (FYI, a bit south of Grayland) where I found good
variety of shorebirds including another *RUFF*, another *Stilt Sandpiper*,
Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, Long-billed Dowitchers, Red-necked
Phalaropes, 22 Pectoral Sandpipers (but alas, no sharpie) and numerous
Least and Western Sandpipers. The Ruff appeared to be different from the
Hoquiam bird with a much lighter breast and belly area. It was loosely
associated with the Pectorals.
