Hi Tweeters & Inland-NW-Birders -

An updated version of the 2018 county year list project is up at Washington Birder. We've received updates from all counties with details through the end of August. County compilers, especially for the under-birded counties, would appreciate receiving reports of any birds seen in their counties.

This year with 2/3 of the year done, we've tallied 381 species statewide. That's six more than last year at this point [375], one more than 2016 [380], four more than 2015 [377], eight better than 2014's 373 and one below 2013's total of 382.

Eastern WA has tallied 311 species, seven more than last year at this point [304], two fewer than 2016 [313], three more than 2015 [308], four more than 2014 [307] and five fewer than 2013 [316].

Western WA, at 350 species is up 14 from last year's 336, five more than the 345 species tallied in both 2016 and 2015 at this point,, seven above 2014's total of 343 and thirteen higher than 2013's total of 337.

29 counties are over 200 for the year, and 25 are doing better than last year at this point. That said, 29 counties are within 10 species of last year's total at this point - once again a sign of continued consistency despite he differences that we focus on every year. The biggest deviations from last year? Franklin County is up 28 species over last year, Spokane County is up 21 and Grant County is down 14.

62 species have already been seen in all 39 counties. The Painted Redstart at Cape Flattery is likely the highlight bird of this period for the state.
There's not much missing on the year list that is expected. Maybe we could use a few more pelagic birds, and there's always the Fall migrant surprises yet to come along with the potential for a winter duck or gull in December...
