My experience over the past 10 years is that you need at least a 400mm telephoto lens (or its equivalent) to take really good nature photo.  Canon makes a "bargain" 5.6/400L that is light and will fit on the Rebel. My friend uses it as his primary  "walk & stalk" lens and takes excellent photos with it.

Some of the newest mirrorless cameras are small and excellent for nature photography, but they cost as much as a good D$L.
