hi all ... I tend to go the other direction ... it really comes down to what you are doing in your travels ... my travels include National Parks, Botanical Gardens and lots of birding spots, PLUS motels, rental cars, family, sight seeing, and lots of eating out ... I do NOT want to lug my 400mm camera and lens system all over the place and I will NOT leave my camera gear in motel rooms or rental cars ... anyways, after some trial and error,  my favorite camera system to take has been my Canon Rebel with my 200mm f2.8 lens ... I also take a 1.4 "doubler" and a nice small pocket-sized point-and-shoot for "family stuff" ... the 200mm range gives me nice scenics and adding the 1.4 gives me respectable bird shots and the f2.8 is just great ... the whole system is compact enough to fit in a medium-size shoulder bag which doubles as my purse ... while I do miss the reach of the 400mm for birds, I much prefer the ease of travelling with equipment I can carry all day long and always have with me and can be used for a variety of travel subjects.

My experience over the past 10 years is that you need at least a 400mm telephoto lens (or its equivalent) to take really good nature photo.  Canon makes a "bargain" 5.6/400L that is light and will fit on the Rebel. My friend uses it as his primary  "walk & stalk" lens and takes excellent photos with it.

Some of the newest mirrorless cameras are small and excellent for nature photography, but they cost as much as a good D$L.
