Today 25 of us walked Nisqually in somewhat blustery conditions. It
was colder and windier than I expected and the birds were hunkered
down for the most part. We had a 12.3 high tide at 8:55 AM so there
was lots of mud in the reclamation area.

Highlights included FOY OSPREY, BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD, and a lone
EURASIAN WIGEON.

The OSPREY was siting by the nest on the cell phone tower south of the
refuge where they have nested for the last few years. The COWBIRD was
in the trees near the visitor center and appeared to be mingling with
some STARLINGS in the area.

The EURASIAN WIGEON was by itself inside the estuary dike just past
the gate where it has been seen the last few weeks. There were no
AMERICAN WIGEONS within 100 yards from where he was.

Other notable sightings included several YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, many
calling COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and a RACCOON swimming across the pond
near the freshwater wetland overlook.

For the day I had41 species and now have 81 for the year. Mammals
seen, besides the RACCOON, were GRAY SQUIRREL, COTTONTAILED RABBIT,
and HARBOR SEAL. Other mammals seen by others in the group included
COYOTE and LONG-TAILED WEASEL.
