The best part about birding at Sunrise is you really can only have a good day or a great day. Today fell under the great category.

I arrived just before 7am and had good activity (the most activity all day) around the parking lot. There was a nice mixed flock in front of the Visitor Center that had among the many Juncos, Siskins, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Mountain Bluebirds and Chipping Sparrows, a BREWER'S SPARROW, CASSIN'S VIREO, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WESTERN TANAGER, and a pair of MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERs.

Along the trail up to Frozen Lake there was a HOUSE WREN chattering downslope, and the best bird of the day, a flyby WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.

At Frozen Lake perhaps the most surprising birds of the day were what sounded like a flyover peep flock, although I never got eyes on them. I can only confirm hearing LEAST SANDPIPERs.

Down by Shadow Lake I saw one and possibly a second of the continuing DUSKY FLYCATCHERs that have been there all summer.

Lastly for highlights, there was a PRAIRIE FALCON flying high between Shadow Lake and the Visitor Center.

A total of 42 species for the day which is quite good for Sunrise.
