Dear birders and hawk watchers- KB and I entered the lagoon for the first
time, expecting to observe Goshawks. We entered from Double Bluff Road and
Millman Road. Before we hit the open area there was a "tame " Virginia Rail
on the wooded path. Into the open area we observed 30 to 40 White Pelicans.
I am not much of a birder so I was not interested in counting them all,
same as when viewing the 30to 40 Caspian Terns. I was really interested in
the

bluff behind us, with the tall evergreens. Within 10 minutes of our
arrival, a female NG came in behind the evergreens and went to perch. Then
a male NG slipped through and behind us to go to perch into the evergreens.
The female then went to perch on the very end tree at the edge of the
bluff. I snapped some pictures. But will probably not publish them. Then
the female went across the lagoon to snap of a shore bird, but failed, and
went to perch on a log. I chased, possibly 800 yards with camera. As I drew
near the hawk, immature, flew out of the lagoon to land and hide in the
thick , low greenery. I walked back to KB and the scope. A few minutes
later, behind the bluff and out toward the side at elevation of about 200
feet altitude was female and male NG cavorting.
Also observed- an Osprey came through; a Peregrine slowly came over the
bluff an perched in the evergreens. A Bald Eagle or three went to perch in
the evergreens. A Belted Kingfisher was observed for 2 hours, and then
another Kingfisher presented. There were only about 2 GBH. There were about
20 House Sparrows. And lastly, a " tame " Marsh Wren. On Wednesday 13- KB
and I will be posted - up on MT. Constitution for 4 hours. The best to all
of you. Nelson Briefer- Anacortes.
