On the opening day of crab season here in Birch Bay with a crazy amount of boat traffic, Phil Calise and I spotted a dozen phalarope on a large weed patch drifting thru the bay. While dropping a crab pot I noticed this weed patch and commented it would be a good place for phalarope. Then we spotted a bird on it and got closer. Then we saw three, then four and then heard some behind us and ended up with a dozen. It was not easy viewing nor photographing regardless of what the photo looks like with the wind chop and swells from the boats, but it looked like they were all juveniles. I actually had water come over the bow into the boat for the first time! Fun times birding.
