A cool and overcast morning was delightful for birding, especially since there were lots of birds to enjoy! And lots of other park visitors as well: a small group of human swimmers moving southward along the shore while a beaver was swimming in the opposite direction. Several people actually stopped to ask about what was being seen. Usually, folks are on their own missions and don't bother to chat. With more new fall arrivals, there was plenty to chat about.
Pied-billed Grebe - still at least 3 juvenile-plumaged birds, from two different broods
Green Heron - a juvenile continues in the wetlands
Osprey - second week in a row where the family that nested at NOAA were out and about in the north end while visitors from another family were cavorting over the sports fields; at least 7 birds today
Cooper's Hawk - 2 juveniles, presumable from this year's brood were in the meadows; one chased a Barn Owl across the meadows until the owl diverted into the trees; and an adult was hunting in the Savannah Meadow

Barn Owl - maybe two; one was screeching from the edge of the meadows early; a little while later, another was chased by the juvenile COHA, but when I was able find the owl a little after that, it was quietly preening as if nothing had happened

Willow Flycatcher - one still around
Warbling Vireo - at least one in a mixed flock on Kite Hill
Golden-crowned Kinglet - several low in trees where viewing was easy and their calls could be heard (by me!)
Swainson's Thrush - a few night flight calls before dawn
House Finch - lots! One flock was eating blackberry seeds

Purple Finch - calling and singing
Lincoln's Sparrow - first of fall
Warblers - 7 species! Orange-crowned (9) including one Gray-headed, Common Yellowthroat (3), Yellow (5), Yellow-rumped (1), Black-throated Gray (2 females), Townsend's (1 female; first of fall) and Wilson's (3)
Black-headed Grosbeak - calling and moving around the north end
For the day, 50 species.
