We spent the better part of the afternoon this past Sunday, Aug 25, at
Hayton Reserve on Fir Island, watching the birds move toward us with the
incoming tide. Highlights included hundreds of mallards and pintails, 3
juvenile Hooded mergansers, about 50 Caspian terns, one hunting Peregrine,
smallish flocks of peeps including Westerns and Least (didn't id any
Semipalms), about 5 Semipalmated plovers, and one Franklin's gull.

The grand finale--although just being there with a picnic lunch on such a
mild, sunny day was a joy in and of itself--was witnessing a surprise
flyover of 4 Whimbrels (Hudsonian) at about 30 feet above our heads.

Oh, and a lone Yellow-headed blackbird landed in the reeds just as we were
packing up to head over to the Wylie Slough Game Range. There we saw
Greater and Lesser yellowlegs, Dowitchers, a Merlin, and the resident Wood
ducks.

Happy birding!
