Hi Tweets,If any of you trek up to Whatcom looking for the Gyr you might want to extend your trip just across the border to White Rock, B.C.The last two days I've birded at or near the pier and seen incredible masses of waterbirds feeding on fish. Both days the number of birds was very roughly around 5,000. Very difficult, but fun, to estimate. Hordes (2,500?) of Glaucous-winged Gulls, 300 or so Bonaparte's Gulls, hundreds of Pacific Loons, 500+ Red-breasted Mergansers, etc. Today, there were about 1,000 Western Grebes on the outer edges of the mass.If you're more of a mammalologist, you might want see the 2 or 3 groups of 50-100 Harbor Seals swimming around like packs of Orcas. The action is amazing. A scope would be really helpful, although not absolutely necessary. You can see my checklist on eBird. One is on the Pier hotspot and today's was on the White Rock beach hotspot.Jim FlynnSeattle, WASent from my MetroPCS 4G LTE Android Device
